Basic First Aid

Duration: ½ day course

Staff Groups: This course is aimed at all staff and volunteers working in health and social care.

Course Overview: The course covers primary and some secondary skills allowing the flexibility to add extra subjects where needed. This course does not cover workplace training where the EFAW, FAW and Appointed Persons course is better suited.

Basic Life Support

Duration: ½ day course

Staff Groups: This course is aimed at all staff and volunteers working in health and social care.

Course Overview: This course covers Basic Life Support skills and includes skills for adult, child and infant as well as healthcare variations on infant CPR. The course includes: Safety precautions, initial assessment, recovery position, CPR, compression only CPR, CPR handover and choking. This is ideal for nurses, care workers or medical professionals needing annual updates to complete professional membership.

The course is valid for one year, complies with the latest ERC and UK Resuscitation Council Guidelines.

Course Aims:

  • After this course the student will have a greater understanding of basic life support and CPR
  • To introduce basic first aid skills ensuring that the EMS are called and professional medical help gained.
  • To get students thinking about possible dangers, therefore reducing the chance of an accident happening
  • To ensure all students know the importance of immediate professional care and how to activate it.
  • Cover Adult, child and infant BLS skills

Emergency First Aid At Work (EFAW)

Duration: Full day course

Staff Groups: This course is aimed at all staff and volunteers working in health and social care.

Course Overview: The Emergency First Aid at Work course (EFAW) is ideal for all businesses where a risk assessment has identified that there is no requirement for a fully trained first aider in the workplace. The certificate is valid for 3 years. To renew you need to attend another EFAW 6 hour course.

Course Aims:

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of an emergency first aider
  • Know how to assess an incident
  • Manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally
  • Manage an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally
  • Recognise and assist a casualty who is choking
  • Manage a casualty who is wounded and bleeding
  • Manage a casualty who is in shock
  • Understand how to manage a casualty with a minor injury

First Aid at Work (FAW)

Duration: 3 day course

Staff Groups: This course is aimed at all staff and volunteers working in health and social care.

Course Overview: To be able to provide First Aid in the workplace, as identified by the workplace risk assessment, and to a standard recognised by the HSE.

Course Aims:

• Understand roles and responsibilities of a first aider

• Be able to assess an incident

• Manage an unconscious casualty

• Manage an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing (CPR)

• Assist a choking casualty

• Manage external bleeding

• Manage a casualty in shock

• Treat minor injuries

• Conduct a secondary survey

• Administer first aid for broken bones

• Administer first aid for Head injuries

• Recognise and deal with spinal injuries

• Deal with chest injuries

• Administer first aid for burns

• Manage eye injuries and administer first aid

• Administer first aid for sudden poisoning

• Deal with anaphylaxis

• Provide first aid for casualties with suspected major illnesses

Paediatric First Aid Level 3

Duration: 2 day course

Staff Groups: This course is aimed at all staff and volunteers working with children.

Course Overview: To provide Paediatric First Aid, required by those working with children, as child minders, in nurseries and schools. This qualification is recognised by Ofsted, SURESTART and EYFS.

Course Aims:

• Understand roles and responsibilities

• Be able to assess an emergency situation

• Provide first aid for an unconscious infant and child

• Provide first aid for an unresponsive infant and child (CPR)

• Administer first aid to a choking infant and child

• Provide first aid for an infant and child in shock

• Understand and provide first aid for an infant and child with anaphylaxis

• Administer first aid to an infant or child with broken bones

• Administer first aid to an infant or child with head injuries

• Deal with an infant and child with suspected spinal injuries

• Administer first aid to an infant and child with conditions affecting eyes, ears and nose

• Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and child with chronic medical condition or sudden illness

• Administer first aid to infant and child suffering from extreme heat or cold

• Administer first aid for burns and scalds

• Understand how to deal with case of sudden poisoning

• Deal with bites and stings

• Deal with minor injuries

• Deal with fits and seizures

• Understand how to complete records
